Music Is All Around Us

The music in nature is one of God's beautiful creations. Through nature's music, God is able to teach us, and speak to us. Psalm 96: 11 -12 says, "Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy" (NRSV). For me, nature's music is a way of relieving the stress of the day and also a way of finding joy in the new day. Each time I take Crosby and Bella out for a walk, I am very aware of all the natural sounds around me. Each time of day has its different music: birds singing, wind blowing the leaves, dogs barking and trucks rumbling by. I really enjoyed the music in the movie August Rush (2007). In the movie, the character, a young boy named August finds music in the chaotic noises of the busy city. In the last line of the movie, as the music is ending, August says, "Music is all around us, all you have to do is listen". The same verses from Psalm 96 in the Message Bible goes like this: "Let’s hear it from Sky, With Earth joining in, And a huge round of applause from the Sea. Let Wilderness turn cartwheels, Animals, come dance, Put every tree of the forest in the choir." This version seems to combine August's and my love and appreciation of the music that is all around us. All you have to do is slow down, take time and listen.
