Each year in the fall, the Ministerial Alliance churches take up collections in support of the Samaritans Food Pantry. At First Presbyterian Church, our collection will be this Sunday, September 28th. Giving cash is an efficient way to support Samaritans. If you were to purchase cans for a food drive, you'd pay wholesale, but Samaritans can buy it cheaper and get more food for the same dollar at wholesale through the Regional Food Bank.
Our denomination has always been supportive of hunger ministries, but here at First Presbyterian Church, we have a very special relationship with the Samaritans of Pauls Valley. The food pantry was started in our basement, and not only have we always been supportive, but members of our church have been the leaders of the organization serving on the board and often serving as presidents of the board. The volunteers each week come from many organizations, but there have always been Presbyterians there.
Samaritans also always need volunteers. Food distribution is Tuesdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm, and Thursdays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Stop by if you're free during those times, even for an hour, and they'll put you to work.
